(2025) Cobalt Chrome Heads Underperform Ceramic and Ceramicized Metal Heads in the Younger Population: An American Joint Replacement Registry Report

This study assessed if differences existed in outcomes following a total hip arthroplasty, including all-cause revision, revision for instability, and revision for aseptic loosening, between ceramic and ceramicized metal heads in the younger population, and who were enrolled in the American Joint Replacement Registry.  All-cause revision rates were less than 4%, withceramic and ceramicized metal outperforming cobalt chrome uniformly. At this time, ceramic or ceramicized metal, on a polyethylene bearing (i.e., cross-linked, with or without antioxidant properties), should be considered the gold standard in patients <55 years of age.
