Hector Mejia, M.D., is the Managing Physician Partner of TOC, where he helps lead a team of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners across the region. He is a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, shoulder, elbow, and knee care. Dr. Mejia is known for his compassionate approach, surgical expertise, and deep commitment to patient outcomes.
Dr. Mejia joined TOC in 2009 and, after a brief time in Denver, returned to the practice in 2020. With a passion for helping athletes and active individuals return to doing what they love, Dr. Mejia has developed a reputation for delivering exceptional care to patients ranging from local community members to professional and semi-professional athletes.
He specializes in complex shoulder and knee injuries, including ACL reconstructions and multi-ligament knee injuries. He is also highly skilled in total shoulder and reverse total shoulder replacements. As a result of years working with baseball players, Dr. Mejia is widely regarded as a regional expert in Tommy John surgery (UCL reconstruction of the elbow).
Originally from Honduras, Dr. Mejia moved to Orlando, Florida, at age eleven. He went on to attend Florida State University, where he earned a degree in Biochemistry, followed by his medical degree from the University of Florida. His early exposure to orthopedic injuries, both personally and professionally, sparked a lifelong passion for the specialty. While working as a medical assistant during college and volunteering at a local urgent care clinic, Dr. Mejia realized medicine was his calling.
He later completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado and served as an attending surgeon at the VA hospital in Denver while his wife completed her endocrinology fellowship. He went on to receive advanced fellowship training in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he worked alongside team physicians for the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Mejia has dedicated significant time to international medical mission work. He has provided care in Haiti, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic, finding the work deeply meaningful and impactful.
Dr. Mejia takes a personalized, athlete-focused approach to treatment. Whether he is helping a young athlete recover from an ACL tear or guiding a patient through a shoulder replacement, his goal is always the same: to deliver excellent care that gets patients back to the activities they love as quickly and safely as possible.
Outside of work, Dr. Mejia is an avid sports fan, especially soccer, and enjoys attending games with his family. He is married and has three young children. Together, they enjoy the arts, theater, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking.
