Dr. Cameron D. Straughn joined TOC in August of 2023 and specializes in Primary Care Sports Medicine. He is a highly accomplished and board-certified Osteopathic Family Physician with an outstanding track record in the field of Sports Medicine. His passion for sports medicine, commitment to patient care, and dedication to research have positioned him as a respected leader in the medical community. With a successful and diverse career, he continues to make invaluable contributions to the field of healthcare, positively impacting the lives of countless patients and athletes alike.
He is in practice at our Capital Medical Clinic and TOC Now Walk-In Clinic located within our Canopy Clinic location.
Education and Credentials: Dr. Straughn completed his Doctor of Osteopathy at the prestigious Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VA Campus) in 2015. Prior to that, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with Magna cum Laude honors from James Madison University in 2011. He is board-certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Board of Family Practice, earning both certifications in 2018. Furthermore, he holds a Certificate of Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine, underscoring his specialization in this field.
Professional Journey: Throughout his career, Dr. Straughn has held significant roles in various renowned institutions. He previously has served as the head team physician at James Madison University, where he provides expert medical care to all varsity sports teams. Additionally, he has served as the Interim Director of Sports Medicine and Associate Athletic Director at the same institution.
Dr. Straughn was also an Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Virginia and the medical director for James Madison University’s Masters of Athletic Training program, where he shared his expertise with future medical professionals. His passion for teaching and mentorship made him a respected figure among his peers and students.
Fellowship and Residency: Dr. Straughn’s commitment to excellence led him to pursue a Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Prior to that, he completed his Residency at Floyd Family Medicine Residency in Rome, GA, from 2015 to 2018.
Contributions to Research: Dr. Straughn has made significant contributions to the medical field through his research and publications. Notably, he co-authored a chapter on infectious disease in the clinical guide “Football Injuries: A Clinical Guide to In-Season Management,” which is pending publication by Springer in 2020. He has also presented a case at the AMSSM National Conference titled “High School Sprinter with a Football in his Thigh” and authored a publication titled “Fatal Duodenal Ulceration – CML Acute Blast Crisis presenting as Extramedullary Myeloid Sarcoma” in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
